Record-breaking July for U.S. milk production

Milk production in the 23 major dairy states during July totaled 16.4 billion pounds, up 4.0 percent from July 2013.

The USDA says production per cow in the major states averaged 1,911 pounds for July, 61 pounds above July 2013. This is the highest production per cow for the month of July since the 23 state series began in 2003, thanks to cooler than normal weather conditions this summer.

The number of milk cows on farms in the selected states was 8.58 million head, 56,000 head more than July 2013, and 6,000 head more than June 2014.

California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.52 billion pounds. Arizona had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state harvested 378 million pounds of milk in July, up 8.9 percent from the same month last year.
