$2,500 awarded to Texas and Pennsylvania agriculture youth programs
Milk Products, maker of Sav-A-Caf® products, is excited to announce the 2019 Youth Impact Award winners: Henry Wilson, Webster, Texas and Austin Clark, Claysville, Penn.
“Henry and Austin are two inspiring agriculture leaders making an impression on the youth in their community,” says Dvir Frumkin, marketing manager for Milk Products. “We appreciate the time and energy they invest in their youth organizations and we’re proud to reward them for their astounding contributions.”
The Sav-A-Caf® Youth Impact Award recognizes mentors who inspire youth to be passionate about animal agriculture. This is the third year of the program, which has recognized five agricultural leaders.
First Place: Henry Wilson, Webster, Texas
Wilson manages The Longhorn Project, an agricultural and STEM-based curriculum for third- to 12th-grade students. The program is located on a 53-acre ranch on the premises of the NASA Johnson Space Center in Webster, Texas. Wilson is responsible for the management of 20 longhorns and nine trophy steers, the show team and mentoring students on the proper care of longhorns.
Since 2016, Wilson has mentored more than 20 high school FFA students, traveled 45,000 miles to major livestock and longhorn shows, and managed over 100 longhorns.
“My biggest reward is when I see a smile on the face of a student who has won a major competition after working hard to incorporate the lessons and skills taught in the program,” says Wilson. “I hope our program inspires students to pursue higher education and/or careers in agriculture and become contributors and leaders in their communities.”
Wilson and The Longhorn Project received a $2,000 award and a Sav-A-Caf® product package for winning the Sav-A-Caf® Youth Impact Award. Wilson plans to use the award to update equipment, allowing him to spend more time with the students.
Second Place: Austin Clark, Claysville, Penn.
Clark is president of the East Finley Lucky Clovers, a Pennsylvania 4-H club. The club has 35 members, many under age 12. Clark inspires young club members to raise, market and breed all species of animals. He helps provide supplies for members to maintain biosecurity, safe handling of livestock and all aspects of farm production.
“I enjoy helping the youth in my club succeed in their goals for their livestock and other projects,” says Clark. “My favorite part of working with agriculture youth is sharing my knowledge with them to help them grow as exhibitors as well as promoters of agriculture.”
Clark recalls many past 4-Hers helping him get his start and enjoys paying it forward by helping the next generation.
“I like being able to teach a new member how to hold a goat and what to do with it in the show ring or help a first-timer clipping their pig to get them ready for the showring,” says Clark. “It gives me pride when they walk into the ring with a smile on their face for all the hard work that they have accomplished.”
Clark received a $500 award and Sav-A-Caf® products to support his club.
