This tour will provide participants a thorough introduction to the New Zealand dairy sector, a sector that has traditionally been defined internationally by its all-grass, low cost production systems. As a result of the high global milk prices in the early/mid 2010s, many New Zealand dairy producers shifting to higher input, higher-cost regimes to increase production. However, the more recent sharp decreases in global dairy prices have meant reassessment of optimal management systems. The tour will cover both the more traditional and the highly developed regions such as the Waikato, North Island, and also one of the newer, rapidly developing regions of the South Island – Canterbury. In this southern region, economies of scale and irrigation are the main points of difference, with a range of feed supplement levels. In both regions, common themes at the farm stops will be local, national, and international factors affecting dairy business management decision making. Also covered in the tour are research and development and agri-technology aspects of dairying, through visits to the Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), farm extension activities, Lincoln University, and Dairy NZ (with Cornell Alumni).
Other sectors of the New Zealand’s agricultural industry are not neglected, with visits to top notch kiwifruit, avocado, sheep, beef operations and high country alpine properties as well, where you get to meet and talk with more farming family owners – the real face of New Zealand farming – about agribusiness topics important within their sectors of operation.
