Cow numbers, production down from same time last year

Dairy herds in Indiana produced 347 million pounds of milk during April, down 3.9 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, state statistician of the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 64.7 pounds, down 0.3 pounds from April 2018. The dairy herd was estimated at 179,000 head for April, down 6,000 head from a year earlier.

 

 

Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 17.4 billion pounds, up 0.3 percent from April 2018. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 66.5 pounds for April, up 0.6 pounds from April 2018. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,996 pounds for April, 19 pounds above April 2018. This is the highest production per cow for the month of April since the 23 State series began in 2003. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.71 million head, 55,000 head less than April 2018, and 1,000 head less than March 2019.
