Indiana production down, U.S. slightly up
Dairy herds in Indiana produced 332 million pounds of milk during August, down 4.1 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 61.1, up 0.5 pounds from August 2018. The dairy herd was estimated at 175,000 head for August, down 9,000 head from a year earlier.
Milk production in the 24 major States during August totaled 17.4 billion pounds, up 0.4 percent from August 2018. July revised production at 17.5 billion pounds, was up 0.4 percent from July 2018. The July revision represented an increase of 38 million pounds or 0.2 percent from last month’s preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 24 major States averaged 1,986 pounds for August, 18 pounds above August 2018. The number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major States was 8.78 million head, 48,000 head less than August 2018, and 1,000 head less than July 2019.
