In early October, ballots were mailed to 1,054 California producers deemed eligible to vote in the referendum on the Quota Implementation Plan (QIP). This is the program developed by the California Department of Food and Agriculture that would allow the continuation of the California milk quota system if a Federal Milk Marketing Order is approved. That vote is expected in the spring of 2018.
As of November 9, 2017, CDFA had received 322 ballots, about 31% of the total. For the results of the referendum to be valid, 51% of the eligible producers must vote. The deadline for ballots to be submitted to CDFA is December 4.
Three informational meetings for producers were held organized by the three major cooperatives – California Dairies, DFA and Land O’ Lakes, along with Western United Dairymen, Milk Producers Council and the California Dairy Campaign. The slide set presented can be seen here.
