Meeting will be September 10, at Berks County Agricultural Center
Penn State Extension and the USDA Farm Service Agency will be offering an informational meeting for dairy producers on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Berks County Agricultural Center (1238 County Welfare Road, Leesport, PA 19533). The Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) and Market Facilitation Program (MFP) will be discussed during the meeting. Meeting participants will learn how to participate in these USDA programs and how the programs can potentially impact their farms.
Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC)
The DMC program was authorized in the 2018 Farm Bill as a voluntary risk management program to help dairy producers manage market volatility within the industry. DMC replaced the Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPP-Dairy). DMC continues to offer protection to dairy producers when the difference between the all milk price and the average feed price (the margin) falls below a certain dollar amount selected by the producer. To participate in this program for 2019, interested dairy farmers must sign up at their local Farm Service Agency office by September 20, 2019. To enroll in the DMC dairy producers must establish their production history (highest of 2011, 2012, or 2013 annual milk production) with FSA and pay a $100 administrative fee.
Market Facilitation Program (MFP)
The MFP is designed to help farmers whose commodities have been directly impacted by foreign retaliatory tariffs, resulting in the loss of traditional export markets. To participate in this program, interested farmers must sign up at their local Farm Service Agency office by December 6, 2019. To enroll dairy producers must establish their production history (highest of 2011, 2012, or 2013 annual milk production) with FSA.
