Issues facing milk marketing go beyond a simple case of supply versus processing capacity
Farm Credit East’s Knowledge Exchange program recently released a briefing report on milk marketing in the Northeast. The report presents perspectives from Dr. Mark Stephenson, Director of Dairy Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin, and Lucas Fuess, Director of Dairy Market Intelligence at HighGround Dairy.
As discussed in the report, the issues facing milk marketing go beyond a simple case of supply versus processing capacity. The two perspectives presented in this report examine the production, movement, processing and marketing of milk and dairy products across the United States and more specifically in the Northeast.
“The report indicates that as of 2019, milk production and processing capacity in the Northeast have come into closer alignment than in recent years, leading to a decrease in surplus milk, and hopefully, higher prices for producers in the region,” said Chris Laughton, Farm Credit East Director of Knowledge Exchange. “One of the report’s goals is to provide an overview of the milk processing infrastructure in the region to provide context as changes to regional processing capacity occur.”
