Regional Director Antonio Cortes presents $1,000 scholarships to four family members of union members—Lesli Magdaleno Martinez, Ismael Maclovio, Sarai Nunez Ortiz and Grace Tagle—at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Madera. A similar ceremony is taking place in Salinas.
Ismael is the son of Pedro Maclovio Cayetano, a, union member at F&F Contracting Inc. He is a junior at California Polytechnic State University pursuing a degree in business administration. This is his first year as a recipient of the ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarship award.
Sarai is the wife of Fidencio Ortiz-Ortiz, working under a UFW contract at Gargiulo Inc. She is a freshman at San Joaquin Valley College pursuing a certificate as a medical assistant. This is her first year as a recipient of the ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarship award.
Grace is the daughter of Jose Tagle, a union member at Saramark Inc. She is a sophomore at Sacramento State University pursuing a degree in biology. This is her second year as a recipient of the ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarship award.
The scholarship program was established by union members to support students who demonstrate a commitment to completing their educations in spite of financial hardships. These awards are intended to help them achieve educational goals and can be applied towards any education-related costs, including textbooks, lab fees, uniforms and other expenses associated with their studies. The ¡Si Se Puede!® Scholarships are made possible by generous donations from union members.
