After 28 years as laboratory manager for Accelerated Genetics and Select Sires at the Westby, Wis., laboratory, Roger Hanson retired in January 2018. In October of 2017, the cooperative dedicated the laboratory in his honor and it was renamed the Roger Hanson Laboratory. Select Sires thanks Hanson for his many years of dedicated service and is pleased to announce that Amanda Solverson and Leah Marie Hansen have accepted Hanson’s management responsibilities as their own in their evolving roles at the Westby laboratory.
Solverson is a native to Westby, Wis. and graduated from Western Wisconsin Technical College in 2001 with a degree in agri-business science technology. With more than 16 years of experience working in the Hanson laboratory, she is well-equipped and excited to accept the new role of semen processing and packaging coordinator. She will supervise laboratory personnel in processing semen according to Select Sires’ standard operating procedures as well as CSS standards to maintain a quality product. Solverson will also collaborate with the staff in Westby to develop and coordinate semen collection schedules for conventional and sex-sorted product lines.
Hansen, of Blue River, Wis., joined the Hanson laboratory team after earning her bachelor of science degree in animal science from University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Since her hire in 2006, she has been the lead quality control technician, which will transition into her new role as quality control and quality assurance manager. In this role, Hansen will work to ensure that all Accelerated Genetics and Select Sires semen meet quality standards and is a product that yields excellent conception rates. She will conduct microscopic morphological examination of fresh semen to evaluate and determine semen quality. Following examination of semen quality, she will review collection frequency, dose rate and bull health and consult with appropriate personnel to see that semen production goals are on target. Additionally, she will oversee daily quality control data and maintain all laboratory equipment.
Mel DeJarnette, vice president of research and quality control for Select Sires, says, “Amanda and Leah Marie have more than 25 years of combined experience in semen processing, cryopreservation and quality control under the guidance and mentorship of former laboratory manager, Roger Hanson. These ladies are well-trained and well-prepared to accept Roger’s responsibilities as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement. We are very pleased they have accepted this challenge and we look forward to the growth and success of the Hanson production facility under their leadership.”
