McLain grew up on his family’s Angus and Hereford beef cattle farm in Maine. At the University of New Hampshire, McLain was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, worked at the University Dairy and Research Center, and performed research studying rumen-protected amino acids. McLain then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a master’s student in ruminant nutrition.
