PDPW Herdsperson Conference Scheduled for Oct. 30 and 31, 2019

Presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), a daylong workshop keying in on some of the more challenging topics in managing dairy herds such as feed inventory, transition-cow management and animal-welfare strategies will be discussed at the 2019 PDPW Herdsperson Workshop. The event will take place Wednesday, Oct. 30 in Arlington, Wis., and repeats Thursday, Oct. 31 in Marshfield, Wis.

The Herdsperson Workshop is designed for dairy farmers, herd managers, nutritionists, veterinarians and others making key herd health and management decisions on dairy farms.  Two repeating sessions of the workshop will be held, each starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m., on Oct. 30 at the Arlington Ag Research Station in Arlington, Wis. and Oct. 31, at the Marshfield Ag Research Station in Marshfield, Wis.

Workshop trainers include Dr. Laura Hernandez, DVM, Associate Professor of Dairy Science at the University of

Wisconsin-Madison; Dr. Mike Hutjens, DVM, Dairy Extension Specialist and Professor Emeritus; and Dr. Marcia Endres, DVM, Professor in the Animal Science Department at the University of Minnesota.

The workshop will feature three general sessions focusing on herd management topics. During a session on selective treatment for transition cows presented by Dr. Hernandez, hear some of the latest research in screening and treating transition cows and learn how to target the most at-risk cows for a healthier herd.

In another session, Dr. Hutjens will share methods to stretch and manipulate feed inventories and rations.

Lastly, listen in as Dr. Endres walks through typical herd-management strategies and reviews dairy cattle welfare assessment programs in the U.S. in her session titled, “Why do you FARM?”

Breakout session presentation topics will include:

  • “The udder: What’s going on in there?” presented by Dr. Laura Hernandez. In this session, discover the mechanics involved when the udder goes to work – and learn the responses triggered when infection begins.
  • “A fresh look at the milk check” presented by Dr. Mike Hutjens. Hutjens will talk through the implications of focusing on Energy Corrected Milk to generate beneficial results.
  • “What happened? Is this the right thing to do?” presented by Dr. Marcia Endres. In small groups, Dr. Endres will walk through case studies of animal-care practices to which consumers might react negatively and offer advice on how to address them.
