Refund for MPP Insurance Premiums

Bob Gray

USDA announced last Friday, May 3, that dairy producers are no eligible to receive a refund for that portion of their insurance premiums paid into the Margin Protection Program (MPP) between 2014 and 2017. Dairy farmers have two options:

1. You can receive 75% of the amount of the premium you paid n as a credit toward participating in the new version of the MPP now known as the Dairy Margin Coverage Program.

2. Or you can receive 50% of premiums you paid in during that same period in cash.

Dairy producers are eligible to sign up now with their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) for one of the above two options and have up to September 20th to do so. There is a downside, however. The reimbursement will be subject to a 6.2% sequestration rate according to FSA.
