Congressman Jim Costa, a longtime central California congress member and third-generation dairy farmer, spoke recently at a meeting of dairy processors in Hilmar, California.
He chairs the House Ag Committee's influential Livestock and Foreign Agriculture subcommittee. Costa predicts passage of USMCA by Christmas and says he's working for reform of the H2A program for immigrant workers in ag.
Regarding the use of the term milk for only dairy products, he pointed out that the law specifies that milk must come from a lactating female - which he supports. As a Californian, he acknowledged he has many almond growers in his district too, including farmers with both dairy and nuts. He's proud that California is the leading state for producing both milk and almonds.
